History
Dominic began building Moderation in 2016 as a deliberate rejection of calorie-counting apps like MyFitnessPal — the thesis being that awareness and moderation are more sustainable than gram-level measurement. It shipped on the App Store on 14 October 2018 after two years of solo iteration and reached #4 Product of the Day on Product Hunt in January 2019. Since then the app has been rewritten from UIKit to SwiftUI, with a compounding feature arc — HealthKit weight trends, custom tags, themes, alternate icons — each release reinforcing mindful eating over measurement. Moderation is the longest-running app in the Pixelfolio portfolio, pre-dating the company by nine years.
Press coverage
“The more you use Moderation, the more insights you can get about your eating habits.”
— 9to5Mac
“The idea is that simply by being more aware of what you’re eating is enough to help you make better decisions going forward. And by making you decide whether your meal was healthy or not, the app forces you to actually think about it.”
— Oliver Haslam, iMore
“Tracking your eating habits has never been so easy, or more importantly: so painless.”
— Matt VanOrmer, Peer Reviewed
About Pixelfolio Inc.
🇨🇦 Halifax, Nova Scotia · Founded 2025
Pixelfolio is a one-person iOS studio run by Dominic Williams, who grew up in Wales and now lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The company builds and stewards a portfolio of well-crafted, delightful apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Vision Pro — some acquired from their original developers and given a second life, others built from scratch.
The common thread is a design philosophy built on craftsmanship — sweating every detail of the user experience and putting the customer ahead of everything else. A small studio can care about the things larger teams have to skip, and that care is the product.
